Positives of Generalizations

What is Generalization
Generalization is the process or an act of bringing people or entities under a category or a class, separating general principle and commonalities from particulars. It is a logic of deriving a general statement from a particular one. It is a statement about some identifiable common trends within a group.

It is also a sort of acknowledgement and recognition that this generalization cannot be directly applied to one particular person or entity without probing further or without considering extra information that is needed to find out the applicability of generalization.

It is a formation of a general notion, a process of perceiving similarity in different entities. It is a thought process that consciously or subconsciously takes different experiences and impressions into consideration and clubs those set of objects or events to a certain group or class.

What is Positive Generalization
Making assumptions on the basis of your experience and impression may lead to bias and prejudice, but positive prejudice has its merits too. It just helps you in building a positive attitude towards a group or a community. Though it may have its ethical implications, but it is much more harmless than negative generalization.

Importance of Positive Generalization
This positive attitude can help you in adjusting well in different work environments. It can help you building trust and better relationships while you attempt to fit into multi-cultural society. For example, we can simply spoil the relationship and trust by generalizing that people from certain country are poor, ill-literate and ill-mannered, people belonging to a certain religious community are violent, people from certain educational background are corrupt, people with beard are rude and short-tempered, or women have poor logic and old people don't have one.
