Further to Effects on Employees

Ethnocentrism can be a hard habit to break away from, even for the most enlightened people, simply due to the fact that people tend to view the values of their own culture as absolute values.

Also keep in mind that Ethnocentrism is an attitude that can go both ways, further eroding the commitment of employees on either side. Achieve a herd effect and you will have elevated the commitment of employees across the company, even in a cross culture setting.

Recognizing the subtle forms of Ethnocentrism is not easily accomplished and international business people should practice extreme caution when conducting communication across cultures.

Another factor influencing the commitment of employees is authority perception and acceptance. Different cultures can have a quite different reaction to authority or quite similar.

An example is the very subtle difference between how U.S. employees respond to authority and who, even with their individualistic nature, are not expected to question authority and Japanese employees who strive in a consensus driven environment.

It should also be recognized that national prejudices and class distinctions, reinforced through socialinguistics, are another factor potentially undermining employee commitment in a cross culture.

With the average cost of relocating one family for an overseas assignment being $300,000 and the cost of a failed relocation possibly exceeding $1,000,000, it is wise for any international business manager to strive to create an environment where employees are strongly committed and motivated.

Achieve a herd effect and you will have elevated the commitment of employees across the company, even in a cross culture setting.
